When They Speak, We Should Listen

Cute Kittens Find the Treasure with Their Families

"One day the kitty was looking for treasures as she was playing and talking with her friends. She was bouncing along in the park when they found a treasure box. Behind the box was a cave. She walked into the cave with her friends and they decided to have a party.

At the party, they celebrated Christmas, and soon after they celebrated Valentine's Day. After the party, they walked into a treasure room in the cave and they were so happy. They also saw other cute kittens and they became friends. Together, they had fun and they got to have a good day with their friends.

After they celebrated with their friends, they went home to have a good day with their families. And that's how their day ended.

Then the next day, they went to the beach and there was a creepy, scary monster. They ran really fast and found a secret fort in a cave. Somebody had a cell phone and they called everybody's parents. Their parents came and saved the day. When they got back home, their parents told them not to do that ever again. So, they never went to the beach by themselves anymore. Next time, they went to the beach with their families and were safe.

After that, whenever they fall, their cute friends and families are there to help them."

It's the cutest story we've ever heard from Hannah, our six-year-old.

“Listen earnestly to anything your children want to tell you, no matter what. If you don't listen eagerly to the little stuff when they are little, they won't tell you the big stuff when they are big, because to them all of it has always been big stuff.” - Catherine M. Wallace

What I Heard with My Heart

I can read her story on the surface and say it's about cute kittens but it's deeper than that for me. As she was telling her story and I started typing, here's what I heard.

  • There are things that she values in life that could be found in her relationships.

  • Her relationships with friends and family are sacred and safe.

  • That even in dark places, she feels safe with family.

  • She LOVES celebrations (birthdays, holidays, etc.) because she loves life!

  • She knows that we are "only a call away."

We should listen to our children when they talk. By listening to them and not dismissing their words, we will hear beyond what they say and hear their hearts.
