Success and Sacrifice

Updated: Nov 29, 2023

Success, in whatever we choose to pursue, is the result of dedication, hard work, and sacrifice. We've all heard "nothing good comes easy," and it's a truth that holds resonance in every area of our lives. When it comes to success in particular, it demands sacrifices - giving up of certain things we might hold close, to pave the way to our dreams. Let's talk about it.

"Sacrifice is a part of life. It's supposed to be. It's not something to regret. It's something to aspire to." — Mitch Albom.

Sacrificing Time

Perhaps one of the most significant sacrifices on the path to success is time. Achieving success requires dedication and devotion, translating to countless hours spent honing skills, nurturing meaningful connections, and learning new things. Sometimes it means giving up leisure time, not attending social gatherings, or even deciding to work a few extra hours. Success asks for your patience, your moments, and your unwavering commitment.

Sacrificing time has been the most challenging pill for me to swallow because I value time the most. I know for me, sacrificing time with my family (outside of the home) has left me in my feelings many times. However, I make myself available as much as I can until I can make myself available as much as I want to. I'm almost there!

Sacrificing Comfort

Navigating the route to success often demands stepping out of your comfort zone. This might involve undertaking tasks you're initially uncomfortable with, or embracing an overwhelming level of uncertainty. Real growth stems from discomfort, from pushing boundaries, and from embracing challenges head-on.

Think about it this way - the butterfly has to leave the cocoon behind for its wings to unfold. Growing pains are an inevitable part of the journey to full bloom.

Sacrificing Instant Gratification

We live in a time of instant gratification, which can make the long, often arduous journey to success seem especially nerve-wracking. Success often demands we stifle our immediate desires and needs in favor of long-term benefits - a process that requires self-discipline, patience, and strong will. This can sometimes be such a struggle.

In the context of success, the sacrifice of instant rewards is a trade-off for the deferred joy of achieving our long-term goals. Determination and discipline helps us delay gratification and cultivate the persistence necessary for achieving lasting success. Besides, who wants to be a one-hit wonder? Working toward long-term goals is worth delaying the immediate and instant gratification. We have so much life to live.

These sacrifices—of time, of comfort, and of immediate pleasure—aren't always easy to make. However, they're an integral part of the path that leads to success. Let's make room for growth, for learning, and for the maturation required to reach our ultimate goals.

Remember, the cost of success isn't about losing, it's about trading. We trade moments, familiarity, and immediate pleasure for something far more precious: Growth, wisdom, fulfillment - the key ingredients of true success. You can do this!

"Great achievements are the outcome of great sacrifices." — Lailah Gifty Akita.
